AUSA Sunshine Chapter Supports Fallen Soldier Dedication

On, Friday, November 7th, the US Army's Research, Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM), dedicated its Simulation & Training Technology Center to SFC Paul Ray Smith. A Tampa native, SFC Smith was killed in action during a firefight to secure the Baghdad Airport on April 4th, 2003. His action during this fight saved the lives of many of his men. As a result of his gallant actions, his name has been submitted for the Congressional Medal of Honor.

As part of the building dedication, RDECOM created a memorial outside of the building. AUSA's Sunshine and Suncoast Chapters contributed funds to pay for the flagpole that stands proudly in that memorial. Sunshine Chapter's President, Mr. Joe O'Connell, and Suncoast Chapter's MG(Ret) Robert Hicks attended the ceremony and had the chance to thank SFC Smith's family for their sacrifice.

Additionally, Lt. Gov Toni Jennings and representatives from Congress were present along with the leadership team from the 3rd ID.
