AUSA Sunshine Chapter Annual Scholarship Golf Tournament

The Origin of the Royal Order of the Flamingo

Where to begin? Where do ideas for Societies usually begin? With some dedicated volunteers, sitting around, sharing ideas, most likely marinating ice cubes. The beginnings of the Royal Order of the Flamingo can be traced back to late 2002. Most likely November, 2002. Chapter President Joe O’Connell invited AUSA President and COO, GEN Gordon Sullivan (USA, Ret) to address the Chapter and present certificates to Corporate Members reaching 5, 10, 15, or 20 or more years of continuous corporate membership in the Chapter. The December 2002 Newsletter captured the event:

Sunshine Thanks Corporate Sponsors for their Support

At a special reception with AUSA President, Gordon Sullivan, the Sunshine Chapter’s Corporate Sponsors were honored for their continuous service to AUSA and the Army community in Central Florida. Carla Powe accepted a plaque on behalf of Lockheed Martin – one of the founding members of the Sunshine Chapter in 1981. Also recognized for 20+ years of support were L3 Communications, Raytheon and SAIC. Companies recognized for 15 years of support to the Sunshine Chapter were: Cubic, ECC and Veridian. Schwartz Electro Optics and Icon Associates were thanked for their 10 years of support while Acusoft, AFTS, Concurrent Computer Corp., EDS, Fairwinds Federal Credit Union, AT&T, JHT, Northrop Grumman, TRW and UDLP were recognized for five years of corporate membership.

That fateful evening, when most of the attendees were snuggled in their beds, the creative juices of a few were flowing. Joe O’Connell. GEN Sullivan. Wallace Schoettelkotte. Earle Denton. Mike Landers. Dave Halloran. Mike Genetti. Steve Bettner. Debbie Berry. Jim Taylor. John O’Sullivan. Perhaps others… Perhaps not all mentioned above were there. We’re not interested in the whole truth and nothing but the truth. We’re interested in telling the tale…

Well, like many good ideas born in vino or other libations, the next day work gets in the way and those great ideas, while not lost, are put on hold. Read the full and fascinating story on the origin of the Royal Order of the Flamingo and you can become one too…
